Pencil Design of Poster Final Product after Digital touch up
Tools that I have used
Marque Tool
Pen Tool
Brush Tool
Dodge Tool - Range Highlights and Exposure 50%
Eraser Tool
At first I did a sketch that I cleaned up and eventually made the shadows and the pencil lines strong so that I know what I will need to follow when I am adding in the digital colours.
Here I basically added in the flat colours of the skin and the strong black for the shadows alongside a purple background, which will lead to help with bringing out the face and separate it from the background.
This was when I started to add in darker colours to the face and to add in more shadows and make it feel and look more natural, than it did before. Also to make the face look more figured and bring out the expression.
But I didn't end from bringing out the darker shades of colours there, since I still felt that it was missing something else instead of the highlights to the face. So I went on to adding darker colours in on the shadows.
Added in highlights to show where the light hits the face and to add a 3D element to it and flesh the face out a bit more,
I went on to taking the same steps on the Blue and Red on different area's of his clothes like the Blue collar top and the Red cape since I wanted to keep a constant flow of through out the image instead of changing the process and adds a weird element and makes it stand out like if I added in digital paints by the use of the Brush tool, instead of using the Pen Tool.
After looking at my finished poster I thought that it was missing something, so I took a look at a few professional film posters and came across the Thor one, even though it was black and white, one colour made the poster stand out; red. It showed his status of being a prince of Asgard alongside his power, this brought an idea into my head that maybe I could try this technique in my own productions poster, but instead of completely removing all colour by converting it to grey scale and then placing the colour red on again, I thought why not keep all the colours instead of red in a grayish tone so the colours are still visible but they allow red to be the dominant one and stand out more since it is still in its prime colour tone, like the John Carter poster, the colours of the hair and the skin are in a grayish tone and the red overlay on the poster makes the logo and the main image stand out.
The result of this thought process-
I withdrew from creating eye contact with my audience through the poster, because at first I have seen quite a lot of posters that do not have any eye contact with their audience, like Superman All Star, the Princess and the Frog, Inception etc. and also I did not want my audience to really connect with them in the poster, because of them being larger than life characters as well as animated. I wanted the audience to connect to them through their personality and their actions rather than the image even if most famous big studios tend to do that. Even the movement of the cap I tried to imitate a nebula in space or a vigorous flame, a reflection of their rivalry and hate being a hot flame that may not burn out until one of them is dead.
For the age certificate I thought it would be suitable for any 12 and over which I was going for anyway, which includes my target audience of 15 and over but it doesn’t outcast any under 15 up until 12, which allows parents to come along to watch the film, as well as gaining more of a blockbuster gross, just like the big companies strategically do.
