Semiotics

Semiotics is a form of putting together a series of culturally recognisable signs with a moving image

The image or a sign of the thing is in fact not the thing itself; it is the representation of the actual thing.
This is exact point can be made point with any number of images, through the clever use of signs and symbols
We as human beings come to take for granted aspects of life that are anything but for granted, and this could have very important social implications in our everyday lives.
Semiotics is a way of making meaning from the audience, in culture it is also a tradition of thought for calling attention to formal structures of signs, of meaning- making.
So far it can be used to reveal the arbitrary or contractual character of the meanings we use in our everyday lives; semiotics is also a form of social criticism.

Signs are anything that makes a meaning but also a lie since it is not the actual thing.
Umberto Eco "a sign is anything that can be used to tell a lie"

Signifier - Is any material thing that signifies the item being portrayed e.g. facial expression, body language, words on a page etc.
Signifier is the product/object of the signified (denotation)   Signified is the connotation that will be behind the signifier
Signified is the concept that the signifier is referring to
Media draws in on everybody’s' experiences
The Signified will be in the head of an audience

Paradigm - a chain or collection of signs

I could use this in my own production, by having signs that will be signifying a connotation behind the signifier but in reality the end result will be something that the audience might never have thought of, like I would be lying to my audience but revealing the truth at the end.

EDIT 01/03/12
I will use the semiotics of the colours, as in the colours of my characters to tell the audience of who the villain and the hero is, and by using the warm colours of the background, the sky and the sand I will try to convey a peaceful, calm setting that is being disturbed by the sudden appearance of these two powerful aliens. For the past I will use tones of grey so that my audience can relate these scenes to the past and flashbacks, since most films in the past had been in black and white and using these colours would be a useful way of the audience relating to it. Also in my poster I will try to give the appearance of an old thing made a new, through the use of greyish tones with my pictures as well as the bright red for the apparent view of royalty and soldier like appearance with their costumes alongside a different status among them with the different colours, on the poster and the magazine front cover, through this I will hopefully give my audience an understanding of the different role and views of both character.

Also through the semiotics I will need to make sure that every image, scene, and symbol on the page as well as the trailer point towards as well as form together to create an overall  theme, image and genre for the trailer.

My magazine front cover will be an image of either both my character or only one of them, which I will create through the use of photoshop, through this sole image I will be trying to present the appearance of a solider as much as possible, I will also try to use the background to link in with the image as well as allow audience to understand the image. By having the background half yellow and half blue will help to give the audience an understanding of the struggle between my two characters, also the use of yellow being the opposition for blue, which has the connotation of good, may lead to the audience to question the prime motive of the villain as well as all is not as it appears to be, and the signs may be pointing to the wrong figure as the villain. As well as providing an exciting action appearance just like the Johnny English poster.

  1. Have another look at this entry and say what semiotics you will use to help convey a meaning to your audience. Colour, props, etc
